Anita L. Steger age 91 of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the Prairie Maison Care Center.  She was born October 25, 1924 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of John R. and Julia (Stluka) Check.  She married Louis Steger on February 12, 1949 at St. John’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they farmed most of their lives in rural Prairie du Chien.  Anita was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Church, belonged to the Crawford County Homemakers Assn. and served as a 4H leader for many years.  She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Louis of Prairie du Chien, her children, Margaret Steger of Prairie du Chien, Mary Jo (Steve) Johnsrude of Wauzeka, WI, Ed (Donna), Tim (Char) and Terry Steger all of Prairie du Chien, Carol (Neal) Davis of Harpers Ferry, IA and Theresa (Dan) Brandes of Ferryville, WI, sisters, Esther Stierman and Rose (Al) Timmerman both of Dubuque, IA and Ruth (Larry) French of Bloomington, WI, her sisters in law Catherine Steger and Beatrice Check both of Prairie du Chien, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Allen Check, sisters, Rita Zimmerman and Doris Seymour and a brother in law John Steger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner and Deacon John Stierman officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien.  Friends may call on Sunday, September 4, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prairie Catholic Schools.
