Leila M. Messerli age 72 of Prairie du Chien passed away unexpectedly Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Select Specialty Hospital in Madison WI.  She was born June 20, 1944 in Bridgeport, WI the daughter of Fred (Fritz) Messerli and Tena Bunders. Leila was a very active member of the Bridgeport community where she was involved with the Caya-Bunders American Legion for over 45 years, treasurer for the Bridgeport Fire Department for 20 years and the Bridgeport Town Hall for 26 years. She served as sexton for the Prairie du Chien Evergreen Cemetery for 10 years and also many years for the Bridgeport Cemetery.   Leila was a well known hostess and cashier at Jeffers Black Angus and worked at Walsh’s Ace Hardware for many years.  She was an avid Wisconsin sports fan who loved the Milwaukee Brewers, the Badgers and the Green Bay Packers.  She enjoyed baking, and was an excellent cook.  She is survived by her sisters Arlene (Bill) Boots of Cedar Rapids, IA, Bonnie (Hubert) Prochaska of Janesville, WI, and Judy Messerli of Prairie du Chien, WI along with 5 nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Franklin and William Messerli and a sister Mary Jane Thomas.

A memorial service will be Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Joe Irvin officiating, with interment in the Bridgeport Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 9:30 AM until the time of services.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association.
