Irene Mezera age 93 of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA surrounded by her family. She was born June 25, 1922 in Nottingham, England the daughter of James and Elsie (Hopewell) Whysall. She married Frank Mezera on May 21, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Church in Nottingham. He preceded her in death on December 16, 2004. Irene worked at Campion Jesuit High School and the Ben Franklin Store in Prairie du Chien. She also worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Mezera Heating and Air Conditioning. Irene enjoyed playing cards and games with her grandchildren, especially scrabble. She loved corresponding and traveling back to see her family in England. She is survived by her daughters, Arlene (Lawrence) Long of Prairie du Chien, Janice (Michael) O’Malley of Lake Villa, IL, her sons, Robert (Chang Sun) of Fayetteville, NC, John (Kate) of Joliet, IL and Mike (Kayla) of Prairie du Chien, her brothers, James Edwin and Peter Whysall and her sister Kathleen Witby all of Nottingham, England, her grandchildren Nathan, Kelsey, Craig, Cara, Devin, Jillian, Nick, David, Tony, Ryan, Laurie, Kristine and Steven, 17 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Oliver and a sister Audrey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with burial in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Monday, October 26, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a wake scripture at 6:30 PM.
