Carmen Freda (Powers) McCullick of Seneca passed away peacefully on October 11, 2022, one day after her 87th birthday. She was born October 10, 1935 to George Allan and Freda (Turk) Powers in Gays Mills, WI. She grew up farming with her family in various areas of Crawford County. Carmen graduated from Seneca High School in 1953 and was active in band, baton twirling, and FHA. She married Arnold D. McCullick in 1955. To this union four children were born. They later divorced after 30 years of marriage. In the early years, they moved their family to Rockford, IL to better provide for them. Carmen was a homemaker until all of the kids were in school. She then started working in the high school cafeteria, and later went on to factory work. Carmen moved back to the home farm in Crawford County in 1987 to take care of her parents. When that job was done, she moved to Seneca and took up factory work again until she retired. Her retirement years were spent wintering in Texas and spending time with her family. Her biggest joys were her kids, grandkids, and later, great-grandkids. She was also known to drink a few beers-- of course, the ROOT kind. She was always known as a great cook and very handy at building things. She was an independent woman that was strong, very witty, fun loving, loved to dance and worshiped the Lord like no other. She was musically talented and was always playing the piano, the accordion, and was pretty great at yodeling. She never read music notes; she just played it by ear. In recent years, Carmen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the same disease her mother and sister suffered with. This was something Carmen knew would happen and spent a lot of time preparing her family for it. Carmen’s family cared for her until the disease became too overwhelming. She spent the last four years in a nursing home, per her wishes, prior to her diagnosis. Carmen is survived by her children; Cathy (Ron) Peek of Rockford, IL, Dick (Kim) McCullick and Don McCullick (Tara) both of Prairie du Chien, and Lynn (Mark) Withey of Eastman. 11 Grandchildren, 17 Great-Grandchildren, sisters-in-law Gerri McKaskill of MO, Delores Parker of Kodiak, AK, and Rosie Johnson of Nome, ND, several nieces and nephews, other friends and family, and her lifelong friend Darlene Varo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Richard and Gerald Powers, sister Beverly Wallin, Grandson Cory McCullick, and several others. Donations/memorials in Carmen’s name can be made to Uncle Cory Scholarships, a charity for kids developed by the family, in memory of her late Grandson Cory McCullick (PO Box 146, Bangor, WI 54614).
Funeral Services will be Monday, October 24, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. Inurnment will be held privately in the Dickson Ridge Cemetery in Lynxville, WI.
