Gary McKillip, age 77 of Mt. Horeb, formerly Prairie du Chien, WI, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 8th, 2025. He was born March 8th, 1948, to Patrick and Eileen (Cherrier) McKillip. Gary lived a life full of love, service, and unforgettable moments.
After graduating high school, Gary became a beloved bartender at local establishments before answering the call to serve his country. He joined the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, serving with pride and honor during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication earned him a Bronze Star, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his comrades and his nation.
Mary Paulus won Gary’s heart, and they were married and moved to Mt Horeb, WI and welcomed two sons, Quinn and Ryan, who were a source of immense pride. Gary honed his craft as an electrician throughout his career before retiring to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Gary had a quiet strength that left a lasting impression. He wasn’t one to speak for the sake of speaking, but when he did, you listened. He loved old country music while singing loud and proud, playing cards, watching his grandkids (affectionately nicknamed Hollywood and his Cinderella) excel in sports, enjoying the roar of tractor pulls and fast cars, and always down for a good time. If a friend or family member needed him, no matter the hour, Gary was there – reliable, steadfast, and full of heart.
Gary is survived by his sons, Quinn McKillip and Ryan (Colleen) McKillip, cherished grandchildren Henley and Crosby McKillip; “brother from another mother” Denny (Sharon) Paulus, sister in laws Diane Sime and LuAnn Paulus, and brother-in-law Ken Johnson. Along with many nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, sister Karen Lange, sister-in-law Faye Johnson, beloved niece Josey Johnson, infant nephew Gavin Lange, his parents, and in-laws, Joe “Pep” and Irene Paulus.
