Joan M. (McGuire) Poots

Joan M. Poots, age 85 of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in LaCrosse, WI. She was born April 16, 1935 in Chicago, IL, the first-born daughter of Donald and Anna (Cipra) McGuire. She was a graduate of St. Joseph and St. Ann Grade School, Providence High School, and Little Company of Mary Hospital School of Nursing. She married Leslie R. Poots at St. Rita’s Church in Chicago in 1957. They had three children Patti, Bob, and John. Joan was employed as a registered nurse for forty years as a staff nurse, visiting nurse, and head nurse. She took care of her in-laws and parents in their last elderly years. Joan likes to bike ride and continued that activity well into her 80’s. She was also a swimmer and did water activities. She enjoyed going to lunch with her friends and church dinners with her daughter and family. Leslie retired in 2003 and they moved to a log home they had built in the country in 1986. Joan traveled all over the world, to places such as Ireland, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and Alaska. She was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, taught CCD for several years, and was a communion minister.

She is survived by her daughter Patti (Leo) Poots-Flanders, and her sons Robert (Lori Ann) Poots, and John (Jolene) Poots; her brother Donald Jr. (Patsy) McGuire, and her sister Audrey (Lou) Munin; her grandchildren Jennifer (Lance), Juliane (Clifford), John (Katlyn), Brandon, Joey (Kylie), Robert, Shalli, Nick, and Matthew; her great-grandchildren Isabella, Hallie, and Grace; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Les.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 27, 2020 at 11:00 AM in St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Stoetzel officiating with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Prairie Catholic Schools.
