Mary Stuckey, 93, died peacefully on July 17, 2021, at the nursing home in Soldiers Grove. She was born December 25, 1927, to William Leo Crowley and Mary Theresa (Cull) Crowley. She grew up in the Seneca and Mt Zion areas of Crawford County, Wisconsin. She attended rural elementary schools for her eighth-grade diploma, then enrolled at Boscobel High School, where she completed three years of classes. Mary later enrolled at Southwest Technical College at Fennimore, where she obtained her GED in 1976.
Mary was united in marriage on July 18, 1944, with James (Jim) Stuckey. Following his deployment in the Navy, they began their lives together in Liberty Pole, where Jim was cheesemaker. Later, they moved to Star Valley, where Mary worked alongside Jim, their son Bob, and other family members in the Star Valley Cheese Coop for nearly 35 years. During this time, she and Jim planned and built their new home in Towerville, where they lived for many years. Mary was an active member of the St James Altar Society at Rising Sun, WI, the Eagles Club at Viroqua, WI and the LST Association at Columbia, South Carolina.
Mary had a joy for life and special love for her family. She enjoyed more than anything, cooking and caring for the family members that came to visit – especially hosting Christmas for as many as could attend. She will be remembered for stacks of pancakes the morning after a sleepover and could always be counted on to look after any of her grandchildren, at a moment’s notice. Mary believed that her grandchildren were the greatest gift of her life.
Mary will be deeply missed by her children; Robert (Mary), Onalaska, Tom (Sharon), Mt Horeb, Donna Lund (Dan Hurley), Prairie du Chien, Dennis (Connie), Hudson, Cheryl (Jon) Coleman, Gays Mills, and Gloria Stuckey, Platteville; and her sister, Patricia Coorough, Prairie du Chien. She is survived by 14 grandchildren, Robert (Lisa) Stuckey, Carole (Tony) Feller, Andrea Christopherson, Troy (Heather) Stuckey, Brendon (Laura) Stuckey, Terry Lund, Kari Jo Lund (Jason) Sawvell, Ryan Stuckey, Dylan (Shannon) Stuckey, Layla (Ian) Park, Lindsey Coleman (Todd Marascalco), Lee (Lauren) Coleman, Renee (Travis) Helin, Mandy (Tim) Van Natta; 28 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. She also leaves behind a close sister-in-law and friend, Mrs. Yvonne “Bonnie” Kirby; and brother and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tom (Madeline “Madge”) Hanley, Mrs. Jean Cummins, and Mrs. Bernice Hamilton.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jim; great grandson, Hunter Stuckey; step-granddaughter, Michele Hurley; son-in-law, Gene Lund; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Marcella (Johnston) Crowley, and Leonard and Ilene (Merriman) Crowley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Veronica and Harold Duffy and Margaret Dremsa Pettera, Fred Dremsa and Matthew Pettera; brothers-in-law, James Coorough, Frank Hamilton and Cecil Kirby; and in-laws, Perry and Agnes (Stuckey) Sanders and Wilbur Cummins.
Special thank you to the staff at Soldiers Grove Health Services for their loving care and St. Croix Hospice for their support during her final hours.
