Virginia M. Fortier, age 82 of Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Marquette, IA on April 26, 1940, the daughter of James and Della (McCarrell) Cook. Virginia moved with her family to Milwaukee where she later met Robert Fortier. Virginia and Robert were married in Milwaukee in 1956. Together, they raised their family in many places across the country as she accompanied her husband in his military service. Robert preceded her in death in 1994. Virginia worked as a nurse’s aide at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien and Great River Care Center in McGregor, IA until retirement. She loved caring for others, especially the children she looked after later in life. Virginia was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor, IA and was the first women to serve as president there. She was also an advocate for individuals with disabilities. She is survived by her 4 sons Robert, Larry (Kimberly), Randy (Sheila), and Darin Fortier; her siblings Marlin (Margaret) Tampa FL and Judith Cook; 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two sons Mark and Glenn Fortier; and her siblings Albert, James, Clarence, Floyd, William, and Robert Cook.
According to Virginia’s wishes, private inurnment will be held in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor, IA.
